How to Overcome Procrastination and Supercharge Your Life
I’ve been thinking about procrastination a lot at the moment as I see so many people struggle with it, myself included at times, putting thing off till tomorrow, next week... never... or until it's too late...
Psychologists have identified three primary sources of resistance to getting things done. Once you can identify these factors in your own thought processes, you can change how you think in order to get yourself motivated:
1. If you don't feel right doing something because it doesn't align with your values, then change the task and think more creatively or add value to the task and make it better and more exciting, think outside the box.
2. If you feel you ‘can't do this’, then think ‘effort creates excellence’. When you put effort into a task, you’ll get better at doing it. If you need help, ask for it, but don’t let your lack of knowledge stop you. And practice makes perfect.
3. If you are struggling to get things done, sticking to a regular routine will help, as will tackling your priorities first, work in 15 minute increments and it will get you on a roll, reward yourself and get into the habit of saying ‘no’ more!
Here are a few tips if you are struggling right now with getting something done. The best way is to begin:
You don't have to do it perfectly. Sometimes just the action of starting something and just getting the job done rather than doing it perfectly is the way to get it done
Be aware when you are making excuses to not do something and have a giggle at yourself if you can... realising how ridiculous the situation is can push you forward into action.
Why? Question why you are doing the task and what will the outcome be? If is hugely positive then focus on the benefits!
Scheduling a time in the diary in 15 minute or half an hour increments really helps
Get yourself an accountability partner or ask a friend to support you with completing the task, help each other
Turn off your phone or put it in another room so you don't get distracted
Don't beat yourself up! You are not alone, we all procrastinate at times in our lives....I know you can do this!! And it will feel great on completion!
